Helpers for Carol Service Wanted
24 November 2003. Due to the popularity of the Carol Service, demand always outgrows the number of
available tickets. However, there is a very simple and easy way to not only
get a free ticket, but also to have a guaranteed privileged seat as well!
We need about 10–12 people of the following language groups: German, French, Spanish,
Italian and Cantonese Chinese to help sing as a group in leading the congregation in
singing “Silent Night”. We also need up to 60 stewards who will help with issuing
programmes, checking tickets etc. The only requirement is that the people concerned
can attend a short rehearsal on the afternoon of Thursday 11th December, and
arrive at the Cathedral by 7pm (i.e. one hour before the service starts).
It is planned to appoint these helpers before the issue of tickets (on 1st/2nd
December) so they will know that they do not have to queue themselves. Therefore, if
you are interested, please e-mail me as soon as possible.

Tickets for Carol Service
24 November 2003. This spectacular event will take place in Canterbury Cathedral at 8pm on Thursday
11th December. The free tickets will be distributed in the Grimond Foyer on
Monday/Tuesday 1st/2nd December. Due to the popularity of the event, tickets
will be issued against student ID and are limited to one ticket per person.
Half of the total number of tickets will be issued at 12:45pm promptly on Monday
1st December and the other half will be issued at 5:45pm promptly on Tuesday
2nd December. [Special arrangements are made for disabled students. They are
asked to contact me directly.]

All Saints Day Moved
27 October 2003. By a decision of the Bishops of England & Wales, All Saints Day will be
kept next Sunday 2nd November (and not on Saturday 1st). We will therefore
celebrate this major Feast at our Sunday Mass on campus at our usual time at
11:30am. [Please therefore ignore previous announcements about Saturday 1st
November.]

Tickets for Bruges Trip on Sale
26 October 2003. Come to Bruges — “the Venice of the North”. The tickets for our trip on
Saturday 22nd November are now on sale. For only £20
(which includes €5 spending money) we go from campus by coach &
ferry to Bruges — “the best medieval gem in Northern Europe”. Two coaches
have been booked but... tickets will go fast!
Remember: Cathsoc trips are open to your friends and flat mates also.
[In order to enter Belgium, you must have a passport and/or ID card that
is valid for the EU. For many students this means that you must have a current
Schengen visa. Unfortunately, due to cost and complications, it is not
feasible to obtain one just for a day trip if you do not already have one.]

Cinque Ports — Rye. The cost is only £10, which includes

on sale NOW!
Remember: Tickets for Cathsoc trips sell out fast! Remember also that Cathsoc

Pilgrimage to Compostela 2004
24 June 2003. Hi, this is a message from Dale Roberts. You may recall me coming to speak
to the Cathsoc earlier in the year. I mentioned the possibility of trying to
organise a walking pilgrimage to Compostela for the Holy Year of 2004.
In order to see how much interest there is in this venture, I have set up a
community group on Yahoo! Groups.
In using the group those interested in coming along can ask questions, put
forward ideas etc. and I can let people know the various possibilities — we
could even organise a live chat session. The group is at
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/compostela2004/
In order to access the group, you need a Yahoo! ID for which you can register
for free (if you have not already got one). Hope to hear from you!

First Mass of the Year
06 June 2003. Our first student Mass of the new academic year will be on Sunday 14th September at
11:30 at the Franciscan International Study Centre.
This is the Sunday at the beginning of Freshers’ Week on campus. As always each
Sunday during term, this will be followed by our
Pot-luck Lunch at St John Stone House (which
will be free that day!), to which everyone is welcome.
The Freshers’ Fair will take place on Thursday 18th September. The Cathsoc
will have its own stall there. Do call by and make yourself known. You will receive a warm
welcome!
