Italian Mass

12 May 2005.  In the end, it looks like we will have an Italian Mass this year as well! If nothing unexpected happens, the Italian Mass will be this Sunday 15th May.

If you would like to help or participate in any way, please e-mail Andrea as soon as possible!  Fr Peter Geldard

Hispanic Mass

01 May 2005.  Today we celebrated our second International Mass - organised by our French friends. Inspired by this and by our German Mass last week, the Hispanics will try to excel them with our Hispanic Mass next Sunday 8th May.

If you would like to help with the Mass, the cooking or the choir, please contact Luisa as soon as possible!  Fr Peter Geldard

French Mass

26 April 2005.  It looks like, after our successful German Mass last Sunday, this year's International Masses train finally gains momentum!

If nothing unexpected happens, the next International Mass will be our French Mass on Sunday 1st May. If you would like to help or participate in any way, please e-mail me asap.  Fr Peter Geldard

Tickets for Cambridge on Sale

24 April 2005.  "Panic & Stress Free Day in Cambridge" - the perfect way to blow away those 'exam blues'. Our Char-à-banc to Cambridge on Saturday 21st May leaves at 8:45 in the morning and returns around 8:00pm.

We are guests of the Cambridge Catholic Society. We will visit their Chaplaincy, where we will have Mass followed by lunch. In the afternoon some students will show us around the Colleges and (weather allowing) we can go Punting on the Cam! The cost is only £10. Tickets are on sale now, please contact me. Remember: They are limited and go fast. So don't delay...  Fr Peter Geldard

Sadly No International Masses This Term

14 March 2005.  As you may have noticed, there was no Italian or French Mass yesterday either. It seems that so far we were very unfortunate with our International Masses. Where in previous years we had four International Masses in Spring Term, this year there was not a single one. Unfortunately, the overseas students this year were all either too shy or too busy. The unusual term structure and the bad weather this year have further aggravated the situation.

Luckily, there will be at least one International Mass next term, namely the German Mass on 24th April. [The German students and helpers have guaranteed that it will definitely take place.] As for the other International Masses, it is almost certain now that there will be none. Exams will start from the third week of Summer Term onwards, keeping the overseas students even busier than they were this term, so it is even less likely that they will find the time to organise 'their' Mass.

Let us therefore look forward to 2005/06 and hope that we will have four International Masses in Spring Term again - it was a good tradition in all the previous years and we really should make an effort to keep it alive!  Fr Peter Geldard

German Mass

01 March 2005.  The German Mass this year will be on 24th April. [This is the Sunday after the first week of Summer Term.] If you would like to get involved with

the readings (in German)
the choir (singing German hymns)
the cooking for the German Pot-luck Lunch

don't hesitate to e-mail me.  Mario Schweigler

Italian Mass Cancelled

28 February 2005.  As you may have noticed, the Italian Mass had to be cancelled yesterday due to the bad weather conditions. As of now, it is not yet clear whether or not there will be an Italian Mass this academic year.

At the moment, it looks like on the 13th March there will be either the French Mass or the Italian Mass, although it is not yet clear. We will inform you nearer the time. The other International Masses may be held in Summer Term, but it is also possible that some of them have to be cancelled completely.

Sorry about the confusion - this academic year has caused quite a hickup in our term planning...  Fr Peter Geldard

Italian and French Mass

03 February 2005.  We have now confirmed the dates for two of our International Masses:

Italian Mass: 27th February
French Mass: 13th March

If you would like to get involved with:

the readings
the choir (both in the respective language)
the cooking for the Pot-luck Lunch

please e-mail me.

Due to the fact that this academic year, the University has (exceptionally) moved the last two weeks of this term to the beginning of next term, we will celebrate the German and the Hispanic Mass early in Summer Term. (And maybe another African Mass - which was a great success last year's Trinity Term as well!)  Fr Peter Geldard

Helpers for International Masses Wanted

11 January 2005.  In February and March each year, we celebrate our International Masses. The Mass, the readings, the songs, and the food afterwards, will each have a French, Italian, German or Hispanic flavour! For these events we need people of these nationalities (or their friends) to help organise them. Please contact me if you are interested.

We also need to decide the date for each of the Masses. Due to the exceptional shortness of this term, we have only exactly four dates available. If you are interesed in helping, please contact me shortly about your preferred date. Remember: First come, first serve! These are the dates available:

13th February
20th February
27th February
13th March

Thanks to all helpers!  Fr Peter Geldard

Helpers for Carol Service Wanted

19 November 2004.  Due to the popularity of the Carol Service, demand always outgrows the number of available tickets. However, there is a very simple and easy way to not only get a free ticket, but also to have a guaranteed privileged seat as well!

We need about 10-12 people of the following language groups: German, French, Spanish, Italian and Cantonese Chinese to help sing as a group in leading the congregation in singing "Silent Night". We also need up to 60 stewards who will help with issuing programmes, checking tickets etc. The only requirement is that the people concerned can attend a short training session a few days before the service plus a short rehearsal on the afternoon of Tuesday 14th December, and arrive at the Cathedral by 6:30pm that evening (i.e. 90 minutes before the service starts).

It is planned to appoint these helpers before the issue of tickets (on 6th/7th December) so they will know that they do not have to queue themselves. Therefore, if you are interested, please e-mail me as soon as possible.  Fr Peter Geldard

Tickets for Carol Service

12 November 2004.  This spectacular event will take place in Canterbury Cathedral at 8pm on Tuesday 14th December. The free tickets will be distributed in the Grimond Foyer on Monday/Tuesday 6th/7th December. Due to the popularity of the event, tickets will be issued against student ID and are limited to one ticket per person.

Half of the total number of tickets will be issued at 12:45pm promptly on Monday 6th December and the other half will be issued at 5:45pm promptly on Tuesday 7th December. [Special arrangements are made for disabled students. They are asked to contact me directly.]  Fr Peter Geldard

All Saints Day Moved

29 October 2004.  By a decision of the Bishops of England & Wales, All Saints Day will be kept next Sunday 31st October (and not on Monday 1st November). We will therefore celebrate this major Feast at our Sunday Mass on campus at our usual time at 11:30am. [Please therefore ignore previous announcements about Monday 1st November.]  Fr Peter Geldard

First Mass of the Year

30 May 2004.  Our first student Mass of the new academic year will be on Sunday 19th September at 11:30 at the Franciscan International Study Centre. This is the Sunday at the beginning of Freshers' Week on campus. As always each Sunday during term, this will be followed by our Pot-luck Lunch at St John Stone House (which will be free that day!), to which everyone is welcome.

The Freshers' Fair will take place on Thursday 23rd September. The Cathsoc will have its own stall there. Do call by and make yourself known. You will receive a warm welcome!  Fr Peter Geldard
