International Masses

During
Term
Each year during Spring Term and Summer Term, we share the Internationalism of the Catholic Church — and the Cathsoc at the University of Kent in particular — by celebrating our International Masses. On these Sundays, different ‘flavours’ transform our celebrations. The Mass, its songs, prayers and readings are all in a particular language; whilst our Pot-luck Lunch continues the same theme with a gourmet meal — with the best dish of that country/region prepared for us!

If you would like to help organising an International Mass, please contact Fr Peter as soon as possible. In previous years, we celebrated African, French, German, Hispanic, Italian and Polish Masses, and we hope to repeat their success in the years to come. Moreover, we also encourage groups from other countries/regions/languages to join in and to show their commitment as well!

St John Stone House Quiz & Bar Games Night

Tuesday
25 January
Enjoy a relaxing night playing some traditional English Pub games and a very simple Religious Quiz and win prizes!

Sophie Scholl — The Final Days

Tuesday
01 February
This German film was a nominee for the best foreign film Academy Award in 2006. A moving account of an idealistic student who was executed in 1943 for handing out anti-Nazi leaflets at the University of Munich. It is a demanding spectacle of profound moral courage, of a powerless good person in collision with absolute evil.

Karol — The Pope Who Remained a Man

Tuesday
08 February
The first showing in the UK of Part 2 of the award-winning film (made recently in Poland) of the later life of John Paul II. (Part 1, “A Man Who Became Pope” was shown last term.)

Romero

Tuesday
15 February
An opportunity to recover around The Barque Inn as we watch “Romero” — the dramatic story of the life and martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador.

Cathsoc Day Trip to Oxford

Saturday
19 February
For only £15, visit the “City of Dreaming Spires” as guests of the Oxford Catholic Society.

Jesus in Islam and Christianity

Tuesday
22 February
We are fortunate to have Revd Stephen Laird, the Anglican Chaplain on campus, to speak to us on the different understanding of Jesus in Islam and Christianity.

A French Evening

01 March
Final preparations for the Paris Weekend Retreat. ALL are welcome to sample French hospitality & food and watch a short video about Montmartre.

Wednesday
09 March
Mass with Imposition of Ashes at 1:30pm in Eliot Chapel AND at 6:40pm in St John Stone House.

The Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham

Venit... Vidit... Vicit...

Tuesday
22 March
Benedict XVI’s recent State Visit to the UK has changed the role and status of the Catholic Community forever. In a recent film of his journey we see how “He Came... He Saw... and He Conquered”.

The Bishop Visits the Cathsoc

Sunday
27 March
Bishop John Hine, Area bishop for Kent, will be celebrating our 11:30am Mass and administering the Sacrament of Confirmation. Afterwards, he will dedicate the new Oaten Hill Martyrs’ Room at St John Stone House. If you would like to be confirmed, or to explore the Catholic faith, please contact Fr Peter.

Our (Very) Belated St Patrick’s & St Joseph’s Day Party

We celebrate (very belatedly) the Feasts of St Patrick and of St Joseph with our memorable party night.
